  • Render wars. Big test - FSrom vs vray vs corona vs iray vs redshift vs octane vs thea

    Config: i7 6700k (OC 4.6Ghz) - 32gb ddr4 (2.7Ghz) - Geil Geforce 1070Gtx 8gb (oc +80 gpu/ +150 memory)

Original scene was composed in 3ds max 2017 and rendered in vray 3.6

Then i used native converters and tested Corona, latest Fstorm and other rendering engines.

Check photo info for additional details.

Original resolution was 2560*1920. 15min time. For grey (128,128,128) material mode - 7 min. No additional render elements.

And finally Octane vs Fstorm. Due to demo vesion limitations only 800*600. 5 min tests.

                Final words:

Our new FStorm is the king of realism.
                1. Best looking glass (refl/refr).
                2. Still need to improve sss. Final quality is in between Vray and corona. But light from candles is the best.
                3. Converter works perfectly. (Converted from Corona)
                4. Very simple material and render settings workflow.
                5. Portals implementation is the best right now. Easy to tweak with portal power and gi clamp
                6. Noise pattern is like in real photo cameras.
                7. Best light and depth picture.
                8. Best self illuminated materials

So we have less noisy but flat looking vray/corona and on other hand FStorm. Maybe 10-12% noisy but much more realistic in many ways.
I added additional plane light in window (portals were everywhere) in Vray and Corona. Without it renders looked really sad and dark.
For FStorm Sun and portals only.

Fstorm outperformed Octane is speed, realism and workflow simplicity.

Other render engines are noisy, hard to tweak and migrate.
Redshift and Iray is pice of crap. Sss didn't work, Displace also. I was really tired to tweak them. No native converters.
Thea's Presto hybrid engine didn't produce nice realistic gi.

All of them are raw products. And it's near impossible to achieve good results using them.

It was very hard to migrate to Maxwell, Indigo... So no tests.
Engines need to be user friendly as much as possible and
need to have good native scene converters. This is essential and without it
no one would use such products.

Fstorm so far so good! Great job Karba!

I only wished it was still being worked on!
